If you still had any doubt, yes, Kanye West is running for President of the United States of America. West, a producer, rapper and entrepreneur, first announced he would run for the US presidency back in 2015. But in 2016, West was reported to have donated to Hilary Clinton campaign then later switch sides after Trump was elected to supporting him.
In April 2020, West told an interviewer that he would be voting for Trump in the upcoming elections. And with the deadline to file his candidacy having past in many states. The timeline in New York, North Carolina Texas, Maine, Indiana and New Mexico to have his name placed on the ballot in November has passed. And although West has filed with the Federal Election Commission, he has not announced his hiring of a campaign team. This left many to wonder if Kanye was just trying to pull another publicity stunt for an upcoming album or business venture?
However, on July 4, 2020, Kanye again announced that he would be running for president for the 2020 election year. How serious is he? Well, this past weekend, Kanye held his first campaign rally in South Carolina. Was entered the room amidst a cheering crowd, wore a bulletproof vest with the word’s security across the top, resembled someone working as a border patrol agent, not a potential candidate for the US presidency. West talked on various topics from Planned Parenthood, no plan B contraception, to free marijuana free. West even stated that each person who has a child should be paid 1 million dollars. West also makes several statements that have angered many: like his opinion of American abolitionist and political activist Harriet Tubman. West stated, “Harriet Tubman actually never freed the slaves; she just had the slaves go work for other white people” is a thing he said. West had several periods where he walked off stage, had episodes where he was seen crying. In an interview with Forbes magazine, West said his campaign would be modeled after Wakanda, a fictional world from the movie Black Panther. West has many ideas for the US; however, he has stated he does not have the funds to fund them. He will be running under the “BDY” party or the Birthday Party, as noted on his application with the Federal Election Commission, which is his party affiliation.
